From Iowa to Oregon and Beyond

For a long time I felt caught between two worlds: art and science. Should I pursue a career in graphic design? Animation? Illustration? Or should I become a marine biologist, or a hydrologist, or a geologist? These worlds felt incompatible.

As I studied environmental sciences in college, I met a shocking number of fellow artists who also pursued the sciences. I thought this was so fascinating; what was it about science that drew so many creatives towards it?

Then, I discovered the world of environmental education and scientific communication.

I felt like I had found my niche, my place in the ecological dance between scientific study and artistic expression. This was my calling.

Now, I have the best of both worlds. I currently work in geospatial sciences, and as soon as I wrap up work, I grab my backpack and my sketchbook and hit the trail, seeking knowledge and inspiration from the natural world to share with others.
